What is a rugged laptop?
Fully rugged computers need to meet and exceed the specifications of MIL-STD-810F set out by the military. This means all components need additional hardening and protection from extreme temperatures, rapid temperature swings, humidity, vibration and altitude and be sealed against the possible entry of dust, water and damage from drops and shocks.
There are two basic standards. Ingress Protection (IP) rating and MIL-STD-810F are used to determine the ruggedness of a laptop. The IP rating uses two number to identify how protect the unit is against incursion by dust and water. The initial number ranging from 1 – 6 measures dust protection, second number measures water protection.
